Hello and welcome ようこそ(Yōkoso) to HJIS!
Horizon Japan International School (HJIS) empowers children to thrive as lifelong learners who are empathetic and altruistic global citizens — serving students from preschool through Grade 12. We deliver an inquiry-based curriculum while encouraging a culture of academic excellence nourished in a close-knit community of learners committed to internationalism.
Our brand-new state-of-the-art campus in Yokohama houses our diverse international student body of approximately 450 students and world-renowned faculty representing over 50 countries and nationalities. At HJIS, we have created a community of learners who feel a sense of belonging, who can feel free to inquire, and value, being lifelong learners. As an international school, we offer individualized education, preparing our culturally diverse student body for a lifelong commitment to learning, amenity, and global citizenship. The faculty at HJIS supports each student in their quest for academic excellence, athletic and artistic expression within a deep framework of international understanding.
The school’s program combines the nurture of the individual as well as engaging learning experiences in a supportive and involved community. Honoring our student’s capacities to inquire, discover, and make meaning for themselves while preparing them to be connected, considerate, and ethical leaders as well as responsible citizens.
As the Head of School, as well as a parent of two children attending HJIS, I witness each day the unique learning that happens here. We have the warmth and feel of a small school, but the opportunities, excitement, and diversity of a large school. We continuously encourage all of our students and families to take advantage of the programs we offer our community. Inviting parents to talk to our teachers and visit the school, in person, or online, become a participant in our PTA or join us in the many celebrations and activities that take place throughout the year.
HJIS has been providing an excellent educational opportunity to the international community of Yokohama since 2003. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, USA (WASC), Council of International Schools (CIS), and European Council of International Schools (ECIS), we are also fully authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in the culminating grades of 11 and 12.
We believe that when your child(ren) enrolls at HJIS, you and your whole family become part of our community of learners.
I appreciate and value your interest in our school and welcome you to join us as we strive to create a caring, student-centered community that connects, prepares, and inspires a community of lifelong learners.
On behalf of the entire HJIS community, I look forward to assisting you in your curiosity about our school and hope we are fortunate enough to have your commitment.
